Banana Bananza!
Up until recently, one medium banana, whether ripe or unripe, was considered low FODMAP. However, the latest version of the Monash University low FODMAP Diet app lists ripe bananas as high FODMAP. According to Monash researchers, agricultural and environmental factors can influence the FODMAP content of foods. They also state that ripe bananas were found to be low FODMAP in servings of ⅓ of a banana or less.
The low FODMAP diet is still very new and it will take time for researchers to standardized recommendations. It’s important to remember this if you are currently on the elimination phase of the low FODMAP diet. You may find that there are certain low FODMAP foods that are difficult for you to tolerate. The diet is still a learning process for us all!
